Smart Fortwo

Smart Fortwo cars are the second generation of Smart City cars, and were made available to UK buyers in 2004. The Fortwo continued to fly the flag for the Smart family as the ultimate city car, thanks to its small wheelbase, elevated driving position, funky appearance and fuel light engine.

Its automated manual transmission did take some getting used to, and the diesel edition didn't make it to the UK market via official channels due to technical reasons until 2009. However, its new 44bhp CDi engine wasn't well-received because of sluggish performance, despite impressive fuel efficiency figures (85.6mpg).

In 2007, the Fortwo got a facelift, emerging with a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating, more angular headlamps, and a wider range of specifications, including a choice of alloy wheel designs and the option to have an engine fitted with Smart's micro hybrid technology.

Soon after, Smart released the Brabus, a manly silver and black version with sport kit, including fat tyres, free flow exhaust and power steering. Developed to capture a piece of the 'hothatch' market, it came in both coupe and cabriolet specifications with an engine output of 101bhp. However, it had a hefty price-tag.

In 2008, a limited edition SE version, complete with leather interior, heated seats, and photochromic metallic paint finish, made a brief appearance, and in 2010, SmartUK launched a special limited edition of the 200 Smart Fortwo ICE cars. These boasted the latest satnav and Pioneer audio technology, both of which boosted Smart Fortwo sales.

In recent years, the hybrid version has been fitted with a start/stop system, making it greener than before, and in March 2011 a prototype electric roadster - the Forspeed - was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, indicating the future direction of this popular city car.

Used Smart Fortwo's continue to hold their value well due to low running costs along with their distinctive design.
