When people think of Mercedes they usually think of cars that drive with incredible power and luxury. When people think of panel vans they normally think of those things that get in there way on the motorways and clog up all the good parking on the city streets. So what would people think about a panel van produced by Mercedes? Most people would think that this thing would be a van that had power and class. If the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is any indication that thought will prove to be correct.
First things first, under the bonnet of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter there are several engine choices. Two of the engines run on diesel power and come in the shape of a 2.1-litre 4-cylinder with power outputs of 88bhp, 109bhp, 129bhp or 150bhp or a 2.1-litre V6 that produces 184bhp. There is also one petrol option that is a V6 that produces 258bhp of power for those people who need the extra jolt of energy. The Benz engineers are also including a nifty earth-friendly option that is called the ECO-START.
Mercedes has equipped these ECO-START versions of the Sprinter with a system that will turn the engine off when the van is stuck in traffic or stopped at a traffic lamp. The best part from a driver’s stand point is that they control if the system is utilized or not by flipping a switch on the dashboard. Then to turn the engine off the driver puts the car in neutral and lifts their foot of the clutch. Lifting the foot off the clutch will turns the engine off. The all they have to do to restart the engine is simply put their foot on the clutch and put the car in gear. This is nice because it allows the drive a little more control than conventional stop and start systems.
Overall ride quality for the entire line-up of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter falls in line with the rest of the automakers vehicles and would please any professional route driver. The interior will also make the drivers happy. If a one of them was dropped into the cabin they would think they were in one of the A-Class or B-Class cars offered by Mercedes and not a panel van. Of course being that this is a working van Mercedes as made sure to use tougher material throughout the cabin and have included nice storage shelves above the dash and cubbies in the doors.
Fleet managers will also fall in love with the fact that there are upwards of 1,000 variations to choose from to help create the perfect panel van for the business at hand. The gross vehicle weights start at 3 tonnes and go all the way up to 5 tonnes. There are also a variety of model options that include; panel vans, crew buses, pick-up and crew cabs. The Sprinter also comes in four lengths, three heights and three weight ratings. This van has an option for nearly everything.
Business owners may scoff at the idea of letting their daily drivers run around in luxury vans, but when they realize they are not all that badly priced for what they offer the smart ones will go with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This may just help them find even better drivers as well. Of course many of them may not want to get out even when their shift is done.
