The Peugeot 206 is known for its youthful look, stylish lines, and easy drive. Its exterior design and interior performance make it a suitable vehicle for urban roads and town motorways. The downside to its adequate performance is some of its engines having a slow performance. And given its decades-old age, its driving position can be awkward and the rear rather cramped for passengers. The material quality on the dashboard isn’t too impressive either. Read on to know how much value for money the Peugeot 206 has in the market.
The Peugeot 206 has a wide range of engine choices. The 1.1-litre petrol unit at 60bhp drives decently along town roads but it’s not the smartest option when going on longer drives. The best engine choice for long drives is the 1.4-litre unit at 75bhp. Among the petrol engine choices, the 1.6-litre unit comes highly recommended for its high revs, more than decent performance, and peppy delivery of power. The 1.4-litre HDi unit is an improved version of the 1.6-litre unit given its fuel economy at 64mpg but it doesn’t deliver the same speed with its sluggish performance. The smartest and most efficient engine would be the 1.6HDi at 110bhp due to its strong in-gear pacing, quiet performance, and smooth delivery. Handling is generally safe and easy to figure out thanks to the vehicle’s light controls.
Boot space is adequate at 237 litres and its shape practical for placing in the maximum amount. The split folding rear seats allow for added space if you need to transport bulkier items, expanding the boot to 1,100 litres. But up front the storage space isn’t as generous.
Ride and handling isn’t the 206’s best trait as it doesn’t drive as smooth along demanding road conditions. Little feedback is provided for and the steering compensating for this through over assistance. The five-speed gearbox that comes with the engines isn’t of much help either and doesn’t do much to improve the 206’s low-rent feel.
Most of the engines tend to be loud on the road and the interior doesn’t remedy this problem with any noise insulation. Wind noise is also heard when you step into higher speeds. The front seats don’t provide much support either, which can be very inconvenient on longer journeys. The car makes up for this through adequate rear passenger space, but its size seems cramped next to its more luxurious and modern competitors.
The vintage exterior design works even in this age, but the same can’t be said for its interior. The layout is neat enough to understand but the plastics are rather scratchy in quality, the seats uncomfortable due to a lack of support, and the driving position completely impractical. The steering wheel is positioned too far from the driver, the pedals laid out too close together, and the front storage space limited for front passengers.
Unless you are on a very limited budget, the Peugeot 206 is not a smart purchase. The marked improvements made by its class leader competitors have more to offer in terms of present day needs and quality materials.
