The 2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG has succeeded the SL 63 AMG as this years new safety car. When the F1 season starts this year, it is a good bet that racing fans will witness the best safety vehicle that anyone has seen in a very long time.
The new SLS AMG safety car will be unveiled during the season opener in Bahrain on 12 March, and is due to make an appearance on each of the 19 races. German Bernd Maylander is expected to drive the SLS AMG, which will be on standby in the pit all throughout the whole race. Maylander, a DTM race car driver, is a good choice for the job.
The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG safety car is almost a mirror-image of the common, road-going SLS AMG, except it has twin amber LED roof lights. The car runs on a 6.2 litre V8 engine that generates 650Nm of torque and 420kW of power. It can go from 0-100km per hour in only 3.8 seconds and its top speed is automatically limited to 317km per hour. This safety car features carbon-fibre exterior mirrors and prominent F1 logos.
A special plate number with the words Safety Car is attached at the rear of the car. The SLS AMGs 700 LEDs ensure extra safety in wet weather and darkness. It also has a turning mirror that enables the driver to maintain a watchful eye on the other F1 racers behind the screen.
The price of the car in Europe will start at about 177,310 Euros as it enters German salesrooms this year.
