Alfa Romeo’s UK arm has introduced its new 170hp 2.0 JTDM diesel and 200hp 1750 TBi petrol engines to the striking Alfa Spider convertible and Alfa Brera coupe range, after the engines’ introduction into the Alfa 159 range in 2009.
The new 1750 TBi petrol engine is lightweight and features direct injection and variable valve timing. It generates 200hp and 320 Nm of torque to offer new benchmarks of drivability to both ranges. It also promises sensible fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions, down to 192g/km for the Spider and 189g/km for the Brera.
Through a process called ‘scavenging’, the top torque of the new petrol engine of Alfa Romeo is achieved at only 1400rpm, with maximum power produced between 4750rpm and 5500rpm.
With the 1750 TBi engine, Spider and Brera can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.8 and 7.7 seconds, respectively, with both models topping out at 146mph.
Meanwhile, the 2.0 JTDM diesel engine develops 170hp and 360 Nm of torque between 1750rpm and 2500rpm. The unit powers the Spider and Brera to complete a 0-62mph sprint in just 9.0 and 8.8 seconds respectively, and maximum speed is 135mph. CO2 emissions are also at a low level at just 142g/km.
Aside from the two fresh engine built by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), a limited edition trim level will be offered – dubbed the Italia Independent. It features distinctive contents including 18-inch turbine design alloy wheels finished in opaque black, a matt black titanium exterior finish, a radio/satellite navigation system and carbon fibre effect trim inserts. The Italia Independent will be offered on all Spider and Brera derivatives.
