As part of its efforts to gain the leading position in the alternative-powertrain market by end of the decade, Audi will take a big step in boosting the expansion of its lineup of electric and hybrid cars in the coming years.
The company launched the new hybrid A8 saloon during the recent Geneva Motor Show. It also plans to introduce the Q5 hybrid crossover soon.
The companys board member for technical development, Michael Dick, stated that the next-generation A6 saloon will most likely become a full hybrid in the final quarter of 2012. Before this decade ends, the company plans to extend the hybrid capability in each of the car in its range. It hopes to expand its internal combustion engines efficiency by 30%. The company also wants to transform 5% of its lineup into electric vehicles by 2020.
Audi aims to become the best company in the electric and hybrid car class by the decades end. To realise this goal, the company established a manufacturing plant that will produce a variety of high-priced e-tron electric vehicles starting 2012. Audi intends to augment its market share for electric vehicles to 3% of its whole fleet by 2018.
In the future, our customers will be able to choose from an increasingly broad range of driveline technologies, said Audis CEO, Rupert Stadler, at the Geneva event.
