For the very first time, Audi AG has outmatched Mercedes-Benz in first quarter global sales for 2010.
Volkswagen Groups premium brand reported 264,100 global vehicles sales in the first quarter of 2010, beating German premium carmaker Mercedes-Benz, which managed to sell 248,500 units only. For Audi AG, this performance produced a new company record, posting around 25.9% higher than the sales volume in 2009.
Of course, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker took the opportunity to ramp up its marketing campaign, reiterating its goal to be the most successful luxury automaker in the world by 2015, upon which time it aspires to sell approximately 1.5 million models every year.
In 2009 Audi AG finished only in third spot in terms of global sales in the premium-brand new-car segment, falling behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Studying Audi AGs Q1 sales more carefully, one of the key factors that contributed to its victory was its dominance in the Chinese market. Audi AG delivered 51,449 cars in China in the first three months of 2010; nearly twice as many as the Q1 tally of 34,179 units of BMW and the 24,100 units of Mercedes-Benz.
We expect continued growth compared to last year in the second quarter of 2010. Some of the credit goes to the new generation of our flagship car, the Audi A8, which we are currently launching, said Audi AG Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales Peter Schwarzenbauer.
BMW Group will release its global vehicle sales later this April. Depending on the results, there could be a new number one. At the very least Audi AG will hold the number two spot. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz might find it hard to regain the second spot as the year progresses.
