Aside from its presentation of the new BMW 5 Series sedan, German carmaker BMW also plans to launch its Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid during the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The companys BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid combines a straight-six engine with an electric drive. The car incorporates the new ActiveHybrid technology into a 5 Series model to cut both emissions and fuel consumption by over 10%.
The model features a straight-six petrol engine with TwinPower turbo technology, together with an electric drive system specifically designed for the ActiveHybrid and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Its electric motors and petrol engine are connected by an automatic clutch, while the energy is supplied by a high-voltage battery located at the rear of the car.
The cars drivetrain technology features an auto start-stop function that systematically turns off the combustion engine when the car stops at traffic lights, in congested traffic, or at junctions. Its electric motor also features a boost function that backs up the petrol engine. The high voltage battery, which was designed exclusively for the model, is enclosed in a special holder located near the rear axle to provide optimum safety position and proportionate weight distribution.
The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid also features an intelligent energy management system, allowing it to correct its operating strategy both in current and upcoming driving conditions. Its power electronics can assess data signalling a possible change in outside conditions to prepare the drivetrain as necessary. For instance, when the system detects a downhill road, it will control the battery charge level beforehand to recover brake energy with the highest efficiency.
