BMW UK has announced the launch of a specialist winter tyre programme especially designed to help motorists get the best on-road performance throughout the winter season.

In most European countries, changing tyres to suit different seasons has been part of mainstream motoring. And now for the very first time in the UK, a winter tyre and wheel package will be available, due to the fact that standard summer tyres operate best at temperatures above 7°C. This new programme has been specially engineered to operate in true wintry conditions of ice and snow.

Made from a different mix of silica/rubber compound, the tyre can efficiently operate at much lower temperatures, producing heat and achieving their optimum operating temperature much more easily.

According to the carmaker, the benefits of the package are two-fold. The tyre performs best during severe weather condition, but if the winter is mild, drivers can significantly benefit from increased wet weather grip and performance, and reduced tyre wear.

There is a potential cost benefit as well, considering the fact that the new winter wheel and tyres can lead to 40% better wear characteristics compared to summer tyres when the temperature is below 7°C - which means the tyres will last longer.

In addition, the winter tyres feature larger tread blocks with bigger open channels. This tyre technology ensures optimum levels of grip during winter, significantly reducing the risks of an accident. Braking distances have also been improved by up to 20% on icy roads and up to 10% in the wet.

A range of different sizes and styles, including steel and alloy rims, is also available. Prices vary by model but generally start from £600 for a complete batch of winter wheels and tyres on a BMW 3 or 1 Series.
