Cars abandoned to reach highest pub

Cars abandoned to reach highest pub 4 January 2010
New and used cars were left abandoned on a road by revellers determined to reach a significant party spot to see in the new year.

The A66 had a number of vehicles left on it when the occupants were forced to get out in order to make their way to England's highest pub for a party in heavy snow.

However, they then found themselves celebrating for longer than anticipated when the weather kept them trapped.

According to the Darlington and Stockton Times, patrons had to spend two days in the Tan Hill Inn in the Yorkshire Dales, which is 1,732 feet above sea level.

In some drifts, the snow was seven or eight feet high.

But Mike Willemse, a former pub landlord who took charge when the inn's owners could not return, told the paper that everyone had clubbed together to make meals and stay cheerful while they waited for rescue teams to grit and plough the snow.

"People realised they weren't going to be trapped forever," he said.

Some cars had to be dug out and one had a frozen engine.

The Co-operative Insurance recently warned people to check their cars are fit for winter and to make sure they have equipment such as anti-freeze and ice scrapers.
