Check used cars for pothole damage
08 February 2010
Potholes could cause serious damage to vehicles.
Used car shoppers considering different vehicles should check for damage caused to the motor after it has hit a pothole.Potholes on UK roads seem to be becoming more prevalent, with the AA reporting a four-fold increase in the number of pothole-related claims it has been receiving compared to this time last year.
During 2009, the total bill for compensation and extra staffing costs to deal with such claims came to £47 million, the AA said.
Potholes can also cause expensive damage to cars, especially to the tyres and wheels, or affecting steering and suspension, so used car shoppers should keep an eye out for this kind of damage.
The government is encouraging people to report potholes in their area to the local Highways Authority in order to reduce the risk facing road users.
Between January 18th and February 3rd 2010, the AA received an average of seven pothole-related claims a day.
