Citroen UK has announced that it is bidding farewell to the Xsara Picasso model, after being one of the most loved MPVs of all time in the British market for over a decade, with more than 270,000 units sold.
The Xsara Picasso was first introduced in 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show, where it earned high praises due to its distinctive styling, spacious and bright interior, new cabin design and notable safety credentials.
The car was also widely promoted through a long-running television advertisement that featured "mischievous and artistically-talented production line robots - one of the most memorable advertising campaigns of the time", as Citroën always mentions.
"Combining practicality with fresh new styling, Xsara Picasso soon became the family vehicle of choice for thousands of image-conscious parents across the country - who immediately felt the benefit of its numerous storage compartments for clutter-free driving and unique features like the wheeled 'Modubox' for carrying shopping", a statement from Citroën UK reads.
Xsara Picasso, the environmental innovator for the line, was later offered with an 110PS HDi DPFS engine, thus becoming the first compact multi-purpose vehicle to have a diesel particulate filter.
Building on the car's success, in 2007 the French carmaker expanded the Picasso line with the introduction of the larger seven-seat Grand C4 Picasso and the five-seat C4 Picasso later that year.
Last year, Citroen introduced the C3 Picasso, another compact MPV that mirrors the innovative style, distinctive spirit, low CO2 emission, remarkable fuel economy, and flexible carrying capacity of the now defunct Xsara Picasso. With over 12,000 units already sold in Britain, the C3 Picasso now eyes to woo the hearts of today's MPV buyers.
