Fiesta closing in on Escort in terms of sales
18 March 2009
The Ford Fiesta is currently the second highest-selling car since 1965, behind the Escort.
As well as being the current best-selling car of 2009, the Ford Fiesta is also one of the most bought vehicles of all time, it has been noted. The Orange Cars Channel has compiled a list of the top ten best-selling cars in Britain since 1965, with the Ford Escort sitting on top with 4,105,192 unit sales.
However, the Fiesta, which successfully launched its seventh generation last year, is snapping at the Escorts heels in second spot, thanks to sales of 3,510,584.
And with the vehicle selling an average of 85,000 units each year, the gap will continue to close.
Nigel Sharp, Ford Britain managing director, said: "The all-new Fiesta is leading the small car heartland which is so much in the spotlight in this climate.
"The new Fiesta's track record speaks for itself: UK's top selling car every month since it went on sale in October and increasing sales year on year."
Channel Four recently indicated in a review of the Ford Fiesta Econetic that the vehicle's running costs are its standout feature.
