Funding given to develop electric batteries

A battery manufacturer has been presented with almost £1 million to help develop greener, electric batteries.

The Technology Strategy Board made the investment in Axeon to assist with a £2 million project.

Nexeon Limited, Ricardo and the University of St Andrews are also involved in the initiative, which intends to create car batteries that cost less but produce higher energy density.

Ricardo is a technology solutions provider, while Nexeon is a battery materials firm.

It is intended that this consortium will be able to speed up the process of turning academic research into actual production.

Professor Peter Bruce of the university said that it is "essential" to create new lithium car batteries in order to drive the growth of electric vehicles and cut down on carbon emissions.

Audi recently showcased its second all-electric concept car in Detroit.

It described it as a "compact sports car" which weighs about 1,350kg, including its lithium ion battery pack.
