Nissan Motors Infiniti division might follow the trend of Japanese competitor Lexus by stepping into the trade of the small car market, which is currently dominated by the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3.
Compact hatchbacks sales from premium brands are expected to outsell the bigger models such as BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4 in 2010.
We are aware of the downsizing trend and the smaller car category is a subject for us to study, says Infiniti chief Toru Saito.
It was revealed earlier that Lexus will enter the small car market at the start of 2011 with the hybrid CT 200h (pictured).
Meanwhile, Infiniti has already announced its plans to manufacture a small all-electric car. This model is probably based from the groundwork of the forthcoming Nissan LEAF Electric Car. There is also the possibility of conventional-engined small Infiniti car.
We are looking at all the available engines within the (Renault-Nissan) alliance, says Saito.
A four-cylinder engine is something we are studying, but for the short-and mid-term our cars will continue with V6 and V8 engines. If we do decide to make a small car it will still be an Infiniti, he added.
As for the all-electric car, Saito stated: It will be a compact four-seater and will definitely not be a niche car. We will be looking for quick market penetration with this model.
