Infiniti, Nissans luxury car division, takes on phase two of its assault on the luxury car market in Europe with the launch of a 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

The new engine has been developed to provide high levels of performance in line with the Infiniti philosophy. The newly developed product will first be available in both the praised FX and EX crossovers and then in the Infinity M luxury performance saloon.

This new diesel engine is considered to be vital to Infinitis growth in the European market. Only launched in the last year, the Infiniti range has earned praise from both customers and the motoring press. With the current five model lines - the Infinity FX and Infiniti EX, Infiniti G37 saloon, convertible and coupe ranges - over 2000 units have been purchased across about 15 markets despite the launch having coincided with the worst global economic crisis in decades.

Infiniti M Line, a sixth model, is about to be launched this year and can be availed of in either the new 3.0d unit or in petrol.

Jim Wright, vice president of Infiniti Europe said: The sales success enjoyed by Infiniti in Europe against a backdrop of financial uncertainty proves the cars appeal to a discerning audience.

Wright added that it was a must for Infiniti to come up with a powerful diesel engine in order to offer a complete range especially since diesel represents a large part of sector sales, particularly in the European premium SUV market.

Although we did investigate the possibility of adapting an existing large capacity diesel for Infiniti, we quickly established that nothing on the market met our exacting requirements. We needed an engine that delivered not just stunning performance but exemplary refinement too. For that reason, with the Alliance we decided to develop our own engine, a performance diesel worthy of the Infiniti badge, Wright stated.
