Motorists urged to lock up used cars in Surrey

Surrey police have warned car owners that burglars could be looking for security lapses to steal vehicles from driveways.

A spate of thefts in the south of England has caused Surrey police to issue a warning to residents to make sure their cars - new and used - are safe.

So far three vehicles have been taken from driveways - a Vauxhall Astra in Camberley and a Porsche and a BMW from a house in Frimley, which were later recovered in Berkshire, the BBC reports.

It is thought that the thieves took keys from the kitchen of the first residence, while the second victims had left theirs too clearly on display.

Ian Chandler, temporary superintendent for West Surrey Police, warned that used car burglars will always be on the lookout for an opportunity.

"It may seem extreme but taking the car keys to bed may be an easy way to protect your vehicle. Don't use the obvious places such as pots and tins by the door or in the hallway as these are the first places burglars will look," he told the news provider.

Automaker Ford recently warned those with used cars that purchasing counterfeit replacement parts instead of the real article can be very dangerous, as the items rarely meet the same standards as genuine ones.
