New law starts for banned drivers
28 January 2010
A new law preventing banned drivers from evading punishment comes into force today.
Drivers who are disqualified for serious motoring offences while visiting the UK or Ireland will no longer be able to avoid the ban when they go back home.Ministers in Britain and Northern Ireland agreed on the new legislation, which enforces such bans across the countries.
Drivers who are banned in the UK will find they are still disqualified in Ireland and vice versa.
Road safety minister Paul Clark stated: "If a UK driver commits a serious offence while in Ireland, it is right that their ban should still apply when they return home."
He added that the new legislation, which is now in effect, will help to keep roads safer and noted that road deaths and serious injuries have fallen by 40 per cent since the middle of the 1990s.
The Department for Transport, which made the announcement, has also reported new transport statistics.
It said that understanding how people think of transport measures is important when devising policies to influence this area.
