With no new models to introduce over the coming months, the Germany-based arm of Vauxhall Motors, Opel GmbH is now spending its time enhancing existing models by introducing new specifications or offering new engine options, as in the case of the Opel Astra.
The Opel Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX boasts a complete array of aerodynamic and mechanical enhancements to offer a CO2 emission level of 109g/km and combined fuel consumption of just 4.1L/100 km.
The turbo diesel engine produces 95hp and 190Nm of torque between 1,750rpm to 3,250rpm. The powerplant uses standard rail, exhaust gas recirculation, a turbo charger featuring variable geometry, and multiple fuel injection to attain the figures. Fitted with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as standard, the engine also has a five-speed manual transmission.
Opel is investing some one billion euros in new powertrains on its way to establish clean mobility. This starts with right-sizing the powertrain line up, offering alternative fuels like LPG and CNG and introducing start/stop technology. It will extend to new, alternative propulsion systems like extended-range electric vehicles and all-battery electric vehicles and hybrid, stated Opel in its press release.
This newly-enhanced model is included in the ecoFLEX Experience, a driving competition where contestants test their skills in fuel-efficient driving with the first Opel Ampera units at stake.
A version of the same engine was unveiled last year for the Opel Corsa ecoFLEX. The powerepalnt for this lighter model provides 10% more power while bringing down CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by 10%.
