Following the financial support from Porsche Cars GB, the new SKIDZ Hillingdon road user education project in the UK is now open, with the initial courses now running.
Hillingdon now joins Banbury, Reading and High Wycombe as the fourth site for the SKIDZ project, a registered charity that focuses its efforts on at-risk teenagers by helping them change their ways from a probable criminal career to a worthy motor industry experience.
According to the company, "the courses give young people age 13 to 19 a chance to gain vocational skills in motor mechanics in an adult work-style environment so that they have a better chance of finding future employment".
The programme's new centre will give hundreds of teenagers in London's suburban borough of Hillingdon the chance to develop a passion for safer road usage and motor vehicle maintenance. Local youngsters have already showed interest in the project, with more than 120 students expected to enrol this year.
In 2008, the German carmaker promised a £375,000 donation to the project, after being awarded legal costs from a campaign victory on the proposed introduction of a £25 congestion charge for bigger cars in London. Porsche decided that this money should be invested in local communities rather than being ploughed back into the company.
"We are passionate about teaching young people about motor vehicle maintenance and when Porsche approached us with some generous funding, Hillingdon was the obvious choice to develop the SKIDZ project. We are extremely grateful for their help... and are very excited to be able to open such a fantastic workshop for these young people to learn in", said Steve Godfrey, head of the SKIDZ Motor Project.
