As Renault continues to steer itself towards zero-emission motoring through the release of its Zero Emission (Z.E.) range by 2011, the French company is still focusing on cutting down the ecological impact of its current line. The newest development to come out from the eco-friendly marque is the diesel-powered Renault Clio with just 98g/k of CO2 emissions – their least polluting production vehicle ever.

Introduced in January at the 2010 European Motor Show in Brussels, the new 1.5 litre dCi 86 Renault eco2 version of the five-door Expression and three-door Extreme is now available across UK showrooms with a starting price of £12,690.

The Clio eco2 boats several fuel-saving techniques in terms of aerodynamics and engine. The engine for example is specifically engineered for the job. It features taller gearing across the transmission ratios, in which the dCi 86’s flexibility and torque allow this to be attained without significant impact on the performance; frictional losses reduction in the gearbox and engine through the introduction of a low-viscosity lubricants; and dedicated engine mapping that focuses on cutting down CO2 emissions and fuel consumption,

Meanwhile, the aerodynamics of the car has been enhanced and comes with 15mm extended flexible lip under front bumper, a specific underbody enclosure for the rear axle and front wheel arch liner extension flaps. These aerodynamic aids reduce the car’s CO2 emissions by 17g/km. Rounding off the range of modifications, the car gets a batch of reduced rolling-resistance Michelin 185 x 60 R15 low-energy consumption tyres.

This new fuel-saving version is available as a five-door Expression eco2 and a three-door Extreme eco2. The list of standard specification of each models include front fog lights, electric front windows and RDS radio/CD with fingertip remote control. Options available include fully-integrated Carminat TomTom sat nav and 15-inch alloy wheels.
