Skoda UK has unveiled the most eco-friendly model ever to wear the iconic Skoda badge - the new Fabia Greenline II - which is scheduled to hit the British market next week.
At the heart of the second-generation Greenline is an innovative three-cylinder turbocharged 1.2 TDI CR DPF common rail (high-pressure direct injection) powerplant, capable of generating 75 horsepower and delivering an impressive 83.1mpg (combined cycle) and exceptional low carbon dioxide emissions of just 89g/km. This also means that the car is exempt from road tax.
Priced at £13,740, the five-door estate car comes complete with a £800 extra standard equipment kit over its predecessor, which includes ESP, cruise control, an alarm with tilt-sensor, stop-start function and tyre pressure monitor (TPM). A hatchback version of the Greenline II will also be available from October 2010.
One of the technological changes introduced to reduce exhaust emissions and boost fuel efficiency is the stop-start system, which automatically operates, turning off the engine when the driver stops the car, engages neutral and releases the clutch. Once the driver has engaged the clutch, the engine will restart. The stop-start function can improve the fuel consumption by up to 4.2mpg on a combined cycle or up to 7.7mpg in city traffic.
Other technologies fitted on the Greenline II to improve fuel economy are low-rolling resistance tyres, an aerodynamically-covered and lowered chassis, an energy recuperation that uses the kinetic energy of the car for battery recharging and a gear recommendation system that helps the driver optimise the engine's potential.
