The new Toyota Auris hybrid has instantly bagged its first award as it has been named as the WhatGreenCar Car of the Year 2010, shortly after it was officially made available for sale.

The British-made Auris Hybrid was selected from a short-list of ten green car finalists, which were test-driven by six of the top green transport and environmental experts in the UK. The completely independent judging showcased the most innovative green new vehicles available for sale in the UK during this year.

"The judges were particularly impressed by Toyota's Auris Hybrid; the latest in their developing hybrid range and, most significantly, the first hybrid in the 'small family' class. Cheaper and smaller than the Prius, the new Auris Hybrid will allow significantly more car buyers to join the 'hybrid owners' club. In addition to the car's superior drive and state-of-the-art driver control options, the judges also noted its 'normal' looks, in contrast to the more futuristic Prius; and a sign that hybrid technology is now becoming mainstream", said Dr Ben Lane, managing editor of WhatGreenCar, who spoke on behalf of the judging panel.

The Auris Hybrid returns CO2 emissions of only 89g/km and an official fuel consumption of 74.3mpg, a level unmatched by the other vehicles in the C-segment. NOX emissions are also substantially lower than those of diesel vehicles with comparable performance.

The benefits of the Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain of the Auris Hybrid go beyond its low CO2 emissions and exceptional fuel economy: it is user-friendly and offers a quiet, stress-free and comfortable driving experience unlike any other car in the C-segment.
