Toyota Motor Corp and the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) teamed up to help deliver hydrogen-powered vehicles in Europe.

After turbulent months, the Japanese automaker is the newest international auto partner of the organisation. It will furnish five Toyota FCHV-adv fuel cell hybrid cars in Germany by 2011.

The move will further add impetus to the programme of CEP to build a network of hydrogen filling stations in Germany. Toyota will serve an important role in furnishing the first hydrogen fuel-enabled cars to show the efficiency of fuel cell technology.

CEPs range activities are strongly supported by the government of Germany, which is investing approximately 2 billion Euros to back the development of electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle technologies.

The CEO and president of Toyota Motor Europe, Tadashi Arashima, said: We firmly believe that fuel cell hybrid vehicles will play a major role in reducing emissions and achieving sustainable mobility, alongside petrol and plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles. These various applications of full hybrid technology will each play their role and co-exist in the future.

He added: Toyota aims at the commercialisation of fuel cell vehicles around 2015. To achieve this goal a hydrogen charging infrastructure is necessary, so close tie-ups between car manufacturers and infrastructure companies are of vital importance.

Other partners of CEP are setting up carbon dioxide-free hydrogen filling stations at primary locations between Hamburg and Berlin. Further, the partnership is campaigning to enhance the quantity of hydrogen fuel yielded from renewable sources by around 50 percent.

Meanwhile, during last weeks Geneva Motor Show, Toyota showcased the FCHV-adv to demonstrate its success in cold weather operation and enhancing driving range.
