Due to customer feedback, Toyota Motors is preparing to conduct a recall programme for some Lexus LS 460 and LS 600h models equipped with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS).
The exact number of units involved is currently being finalised; however, initial figures indicate nearly 11,500 units are affected around the world. According to its press release, the company is expecting about 40 models to be affected in the British car market. Other Lexus models are not affected by this problem.
Toyota Motors has put the matter under investigation since March 2010, and has received approximately ten complaints from Japan. To date, no accidents connected to the issue have been recorded and no reported cases regarding this concern have been received across the UK.
VGRS is mated to the car to allow easier handling specially during low-speed driving and offers better stability during high-speed driving compared to conventional steering through changing the gear ratio.
The fault happens during low speed when manipulating the steering wheel to full lock position. If the driver would then quickly turn back the steering wheel, a steering wheel off-centre condition is likely to occur even if the driving wheels should be straight. This phenomenon will automatically be resolved within a few seconds. The driver may become aware of this correction when driving straight in the course of the correction operation as the steering wheel centre slowly moves by itself into the centre position. The driver is still in control of the car while the steering wheel corrects itself.
Toyota Motors has already notified the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) that a recall programme will be initiated across the UK.
