The government has remarked on the UK's potential to lead the world when it comes to electric cars.
The UK could lead the world when it comes to making electric cars an everyday part of life, the government has said.According to transport secretary Andrew Adonis, it is hoped that these vehicles - together with low-carbon models - will be commonplace on the roads in the next five years.
He commented as a new initiative named Plugged-In Places, which looks to create between three and six "electric car cities", was launched.
Businesses and regions have been invited to bid for money recently unlocked by the government for the installation of charging stations. The Department for Transport announced £30 million for this purpose.
"Plugged-In Places is one very significant step putting us firmly on the path to a low-carbon future," Lord Adonis said.
The news follows other environmental developments in the motoring sector this week.
