On Thursday, the government announced that motorists will be given up to 5,000 pounds when purchasing an ultra-low carbon car.
Distribution of the Plug-in Car Grant will be given directly to consumers at the point of purchase. The grant will be available throughout the UK starting in January 2011, when a variety of eligible cars is anticipated to be made available.
The scheme also include the roll-out of a 30 million pound fund for Plugged-In Places, a network of electric vehicle hubs that will make charging infrastructure available in major supermarkets, car parks, retail and leisure centres, along with the streets. The initial Plugged-In Places will be in Milton Keynes, the North East and London. More than 11,000 vehicle recharging points will be installed at these places over the coming three years.
The initiatives are included as part of a 450 million pound Government plan to support the establishment of a growing market for ultra-low carbon cars. The plans are expected to help the government meet its commitment to cut carbon emissions from transport, and create new business opportunities for UK-based firms in the charging infrastructure and automotive sectors.
Decarbonising transport isnt an aspiration - its a reality. By this time next year, cutting edge motorists will be on the roads with these next generation cars theyve purchased because of our help, said Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis.
And thanks to the Plugged-In Places we will have in place infrastructure to support this growing early market, he added.
