Used Ford owners given recycling details

Used Ford owners given recycling details

22 January 2010

Drivers of used Fords have been told about the brand's recycling credentials.

Ford has revealed that it saves about 20,000 tonnes of materials from landfills every year - by making them into cars.

Bottles, bottle tops and old fabrics are among the things it saves in order to make vehicle parts for the Ford Focus.

For example, recycled plastics form part of components such as the battery trays, air conditioners, heaters and the air cleaner system.

The fabric seats are 100 per cent recycled.

Ford maintains the Product Sustainability Index to indicate its environmental and recycling credentials.

It covers eight elements of its sustainability, such as how much it uses recycled and renewable substances.

Additionally, Ford is carrying out further research in bio-based alternatives to certain materials such as rubber and foam.

Recently, Ford announced that it is setting up a third wind turbine on its 475-acre site by the Thames.

It will be established later on this year, with planning permission having been gained in 2009.
