The very first Vauxhall Ampera production prototype received its first electric charge from the recently installed recharging station at Vauxhalls European headquarters.
The Vauxhall Ampera E-REV will use the energy stockpiled in its 16kWh lithium-ion battery to get to the first phase of the 370-mile journey without emitting carbon dioxide. The trip will start from Russelsheim, Germany and will end at the Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland.
Driving the car is Gherardo Corsini, Vauxhalls director of Electric Vehicle Implementation.
I am really looking forward to putting a lot of miles on our first Ampera prototype during this maiden test on public roads, said Corsini. With 370 Nm of instantaneous, electric torque under my right foot, it promises to be an interesting and almost silent drive to Geneva.
When the cars battery charge drops after around 40 miles, its on-board internal combustion engine will start to produce electricity to continue the remainder of the journey.
A standard battery electric car needs to recharge its depleted battery for a couple of hours before continuing the journey. However, the Vauxhall Ampera brings emission-free electric mobility to boundless possibilities as compared to conventional electric vehicles. It can drive without a glitch and without stoppage in excess of 300 miles before recharging.
The Vauxhall Amperas long-distance journey from Germany to Switzerland shows that the four-seat, five-door prototype can cope as a main household vehicle. Production of the Vauxhall Ampera is slated to commence towards the end of 2011.
Vauxhalls bloggers will accompany the prototype vehicle during its first long-distance test. The test started at 9:30 am on Sunday (February 28th). The blog will give blow-by-blow updates about the journey. The test is expected to end in March 3, the day before the Geneva Motor Show opens its gates to the public.
