Vauxhall Astra wins golden award

05 November 2009

The Vauxhall Astra has received a readers' accolade.

Drivers of used Vauxhalls may be interested to learn that the new Astra has won the Golden Steering Wheel Award 2009.

The motor was given the accolade for being the best in the compact class in the Auto Bild magazine ceremony.

Some 40 million readers in 26 countries were involved in the vote, which saw the Vauxhall Opel Astra reach top spot, representing the car's first major trophy.

European readers selected their favourite motors in six categories, after which a panel of experts, from technicians to racing drivers, tested and judged the autos.

According to the manufacturer, it achieved the best rankings in terms of its engine, fuel consumption, braking, driver assistance safety systems, chassis and steering.

Commenting on the car's success, Andy Gilson, Vauxhall marketing director said: "This is terrific news and a real feather in our cap.

"Not only has the new Astra been shortlisted for the European Car of the Year … but it's now taken an important award from an international jury of readers."

Fans of used cars may look forward to its release on December 11th.

In other car awards, the Toyota Prius was recently named the Japan Car of the Year.
