Vauxhall will unveil its electric concept car Flextreme GT-E at the Geneva motor show in the first week of March.

The four-door coupe Flextreme GT-E utilises an E-REV plug-in hybrid drivetrain similar to the Ampera, which will be available for sale in 2012 for about 35,000 pounds.

The battery of the GT-E takes almost three hours to completely charge through a household plug socket. The fully charged battery can cover a projected 40 miles distance. This is enough for most of the trips taken in the UK however for longer journeys, the car has a 1.4-litre petrol engine that can produce more electricity, and give an overall range of over 300 miles.

Vauxhall said that the system can provide an average of 175mpg, and CO2 emissions below 40g/km. The Flextreme GT-E, with 161bhp and 273lb ft of pull, can make a 0-62mph in 9.0 seconds, and has a top speed of 124mph.

The GT-E is slightly shorter, and much sleeker and lower compared to an Insignia family car. It has rear-hinged doors similar to the latest Meriva.

The concept car was designed to be as aerodynamic as possible. It has 0.22 drag coefficient, relatively lower compared to that of the Mercedes-BenzE-Class Coupe, which is considered the most aerodynamically efficient production vehicle.

The Flextreme GT-E also has front intakes to direct airflow over the car body. The wheels of this concept car have low-rolling-resistance tyres, while 350mm-long active spoilers are activated at speeds of over 30mph to enhance aerodynamics.
