Volkswagen has introduced the new Touran compact MPV at the Auto Mobil International held in Leipzig, Germany.

Volkswagens beloved small cars, the Golf and Polo, are Europes best sellers, but earlier versions of the Touran have sold nearly 1.13 million models throughout the continent.

The cars ample interior space and sturdy framework ensure that the Touran has kept meeting strong demand in Europe against its like models, the Vauxhall Zafira and Renault Scenic.

The Touran is a good example of Volkswagens new design language with Golf and Polo-inspired styling apparent in the new front bumper, grille, and tailgate.

The cars tail-lights have LED bulbs, while new alloy wheels and chrome-edged rubbing strips are introduced on the newest offering in the Volkswagen range.

The Touran features ample boot space; 1,913 litres when the third seat row is folded flat and 695 when up. The interior also has 39 storage compartments in a variety of sizes for greater practicality.

Fuel efficiency is also at the heart of the new Touran, as lowering carbon emissions are Volkswagens highest priority. The car manufacturer has claimed that the Touran is the most efficient compact MPV unit it has so far produced. However, in spite of the impressive 61.4mpg fuel economy figures, the German carmaker has not released the cars CO2 figures, though it says they will be lower than outgoing models.

Two petrol engines will also be introduced, including the new 1.2 litre TSI engine which offers 105PS. In addition, two diesel engines are in the range including the 1.6 litre TDI and the 2.0 TDI, which is available in four outputs ranging between 90PS and 170PS.

Volkswagen will release the prices and specification information before the sale date this September and the first models will hit the showrooms a month later.
