Volkswagens most fuel-efficient and cleanest Polo is now available for sale.
The latest 80.7mpg Polo Bluemotion costs 15,045 pounds for the five-door, and 14,445 pounds for the three-door version.
The cars 74bhp 1.2-litre diesel engine generates only 91g/km of CO2 emissions which means the car costs nothing to tax.
Aside from its new engine, the Polo features an engine stop-start system, longer gearing, aerodynamic tweaks, and regenerative braking. It also has the standard air-conditioning, alloy wheels, stability and cruise controls, as well as four airbags.
With a maximum speed of 107mph, it can cover 0-62mph for 13.9 seconds.
The Polo Bluemotion is not the most efficient and cleanest car sold in the UK because the Smart Fourtwo diesel holds the title on both categories. However, the Polo is faster, seats five, and has significantly greater boot space.
The Polo is also not the most efficient Volkswagen car to date. Though it was not marketed in the UK, the Lupo 3L had an average return of 94mpg - equivalent to three litres of fuel used for every 100 kilometres covered.
Volkswagen has also created a 1.0-litre car that can give 282mpg. However, Ferdinand Piech, the present chairman of VWs supervisory board, pushed it to almost 150 miles at a meeting in 2002, making it carry off 317mpg.
The company built that model and launched it as the L1 development car during the Frankfurt Motor Show last autumn. This concept car can reach 205mpg and only 36g/km of C02 emissions. Volkswagen will produce the tandem two-seater in limited numbers to be available in 2011.
