Swedish automaker Volvo Car has extended its engine range with the introduction of two new four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engines - T3 and T4 - using the latest direct injection technology. The Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDi) concept was designed to offer high motoring performance while delivering improved fuel consumption.

The 1.6-litre GTDi T4 producing 180hp and 240Nm of torque and the T3 with 150hp will be available in all-new Volvo V60 and S60 later this year.

"Small, high-performance GTDi engines are a part of our bid to get more energy out of smaller engines", said Magnus Jonsson, senior vice president for Product Development at Volvo Cars.

On both powerplants, each injector has been placed centrally above the piston, beside the spark plug. The injectors, developed by Volvo in cooperation with Bosch, have six holes each to offer atomised fuel distribution.

Direct injection technology, along with variable valve timing (VVT) and turbocharging, has made it possible to deliver high performance at the same level of larger engines, while reducing environmental impact and fuel consumption to significantly lower levels.

"We estimate reductions in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in the region of twenty percent compared with a conventional petrol engine with larger displacement and similar performance", added Jonsson.

The 1.6-litre GTDi T4 and T3 engines will be available with a six-speed manual transmission, while an automatic six-speed Powershift gearbox will be offered as an option on the T4.

Both variants feature DRIVe fuel-saving technology as standard. The manual version is equipped with a Start/Stop technology that shuts the engine off when the vehicle is at rest and automatically restarts it when the driver presses the clutch to go forward. Meanwhile, the automatic version is fitted with a technology that disengages the gear once the driver releases the accelerator when the vehicle is rolling. As such, it improves fuel consumption and offers less rolling resistance.
