Volvo Cars UK have launched a three-point plan that is aimed at providing motorists with comprehensive emissions information when they purchase their next vehicle, irrespective of the brand, to help fight the rising air pollution problem in the UK.
With the Environmental Audit Committee estimating 50,000 premature deaths due to air pollution and the country facing a fine of up to £300 million for its poor air quality, Volvo believes that it is the time to educate used car drivers about the complete emissions factor of the car rather than merely focusing on CO2. According to the carmaker, automotive emissions other than CO2 such as hydrocarbons, NOx and particulates are the major contributors to poor air quality specifically in urban areas. They were also among the key reasons why the country has the highest rate of asthma cases in the world.
Volvo's three-point plan includes the following: first, the launch of an environmental label to sit along the current CO2 label displayed in used and new cars showrooms. Second, launch a PC/phone application, which gives customers access to CO2 emission and pollution information when visiting a showroom. Lastly, start an Emissions Equality Automotive Air Pollution Think Tank to put the subject of air quality and emissions at the front of every individual's mind on a continued basis.
"This isn't about reducing the focus on CO2, our campaign is about all drivers being given easy access to the complete [group] of pollutants information so they can make a more informed decision when they buy a new or used car", said Peter Rask, managing director of Volvo Car UK.
