Volvo's Pedestrian Detection featuring a Full Auto Brake technology has been awarded at the annual BusinessCar Techies awards for the Car Safety category. The world's first technology can automatically detect pedestrians in front of the vehicle, give warning if anyone walks into its path and then automatically activate the full braking power of the car if the driver does not respond in time.
"Volvo's continuing commitment to pioneering safety developments is unsurpassed in the motoring industry, and a key reason for its second consecutive BusinessCar Techies victory. The Pedestrian Detection system takes vehicle safety into an area no other manufacturers are seriously addressing, and comes on the back of other industry leading innovations such as City Safety which show Volvo's reputation for safety excellence is well founded", said Paul Barker, BusinessCar's editor.
Volvo's Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake comprises a newly developed radar unit embedded into the vehicle's grille, a central control unit and a camera placed in front of the interior rear-view mirror. The radar is tasked to detect any object in front of the vehicle and determine its distance, while the camera is designed to determine what kind of object it is. The system is capable of detecting pedestrians who are more than 80cm tall.
During an emergency situation, an audible warning with a flashing light is initially sent to the driver, while the vehicle's brakes are precharged. Once the driver does not respond to the warning and an accident is seen imminent, full braking power is applied automatically to stop the vehicle.
