The Audi S3 is based on the same platform as the Leon Cupra and Golf R, but it has a better interior than either and a better badge. Like the R, the Audi has all-wheel-drive in the name of Quattro, and this plays a large role in the character of the car which is gifted with the ability to pull from a dead stop like no other hot hatch on the market - bar our top three entries, of course.
Power comes from the same engine you get in the Golf R. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (this time branded TFSI instead of TSI) produces 296 bhp and 280 lb /ft of torque and with all-wheel-drive that's enough to get this super hatch from 0 - 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds in a 6-speed manual and just 4.8 seconds with the S-Tronic twin-clutch gearbox. The engine and exhaust sound different to the Golf from the inside, due to different sounds being pumped through the speakers, but from the outside you couldn't tell the two apart.
You can inside though. The S3 starts from £30,640 and it is the interior that shows where your extra money goes over the Golf R.
