A six-speed manual comes as standard
Just as Renault ditches the manual gearbox in the RenaultSport Clio, Volkswagen has reinstated it as the standard transmission in the next-gen Polo GTI. The previous model was only available with a 7-speed DSG, which was quick, but lacked character and involvement. The 6-speed gearbox in the new Polo has been designed to offer a sweet and quick change and also conserve fuel with a longer fifth and sixth cog, and it will be a top choice for motorists who want to keep their car for a number of years, without having to worry about costly out-of-warranty repairs to a DSG transmission.
The seven-speed DSG is still available, albeit as an option. By making a manual gearbox standard in the new Polo GTI, Volkswagen has created a true Peugeot 208 GTI and Ford Fiesta ST competitor. Of course it remains to be seen whether or not the Volkswagen will offer the same levels of fun.
