Five of the Best Things about the Upcoming Polo GTI

There's a new 1.8-litre TSI engine: More power, more torque, more speed!

There's a new 1.8-litre TSI engine: More power, more torque, more speed!

If you are clued into VAG cars, then you will know that the previous generation Volkswagen Polo GTI was powered by a 1.4-litre twin-charged four-pot engine with 177 horsepower and 184 lb /ft of torque. This engine had plenty of character and it was a rapid unit, but it was plagued with reliability issues and a quick search on forums will reveal the older engine suffered from oil consumption issues.

The new GTI has ditched the 1.4-litre TSI in favour of a new 1.8-litre TSI. While we obviously can't say anything about the reliability of this unit just yet, we do know it will be considerably more flexible than the 1.4 TSI engine, with 189 horsepower and 236 lb /ft of torque - that's 59 lb /ft and 12 bhp more than the older car, and this has skimmed 0.2 seconds off the 0 - 62 mph time, which now stands at a very tasty 6.7 seconds, just 0.2 seconds slower than the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The top speed is also rather high, at 147 mph. This engine also has lots of tuning potential - the turbo is bigger than the ones' on the current crop of 1.6-litre turbo hatchbacks. The new Polo GTI is also expected to improve on its predecessor’s fuel economy and CO2 emission figures of 47.9mpg and 139g/km, despite the extra engine capacity.

The increase in torque means that in-gear times will be much better and drivers won't have to search the upper limits of the rev range to really get moving. What's most impressive about this unit, in terms of torque, is that it produces the same amount as VW's 140 2.0-litre TDI. For a 1.8-litre petrol, I think that's rather remarkable. It also means that this is the most torque-rich hot hatch in its segment, beating out the Peugeot 208 GTI (203 lb /ft) and Ford Fiesta ST (214 lb/ ft on overboost).

The fact that this engine is paired with a 6-speed manual makes it even sweeter.
