Five of the Most Exciting Concept Drives of 2014

Audi RS5-e Diesel

Audi RS5-e Diesel

It might sound stupid, but there might an Audi RS5 diesel on the way - yep, there might be an RS-badged Audi fuelled by the same stuff tractors run on. But don't despair. In a recent drive of the prototype, Auto Express were blown away by the performance on offer from the Audi RS5 Diesel and easily kept up with an RS6 Avant... you know, that twin-turbo V8 supercar-eating monster that gets close to a Nissan GT-R.

The RS5 Diesel uses a heavily boosted version of the upcoming 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo diesel engine that'll find its way under the bonnet of the next A5 and A6. It comes complete with e-booster technology, which is an electric motor which is designed to work between the intercooler and induction system to gift petrol-like performance off the line. Once you hit 3,000rom, the e-booster cuts off and makes way for a whopping turbocharger. Apparently, the RS5-e can get from 0 - 62 mph in under 4 seconds but as is the case with all diesels, it's all about in-gear performance - the RS5-e would apparently wipe the floor with an M5 in-gear. We'd love to see that.

So what else do you need to know? Simply that this is a concept right now and it's being used by Audi to develop the next-generation 3.0-litre TDI and e-booster technology. It might never be a real car, because let's be honest who would buy the thing, but it's certainly very interesting.

Dervs have never looked so good.
