Volkswagen Polo Blue GT
Why have we not included the Volkswagen Polo GTI on our list? Why is the Blue GT taking the GTI's place? Well, two reasons; the Polo Blue GT is a fantastic car to drive with plenty of power, and it is without any shadow of a doubt the most premium super mini money can buy with the best running costs. It features a 138bhp 1.4-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with clever cylinder deactivation technology. This means that you can achieve 62.8 mpg on a combined cycle and the car emits just 105g/km. That makes it eligible for £20 a year road tax. The Polo Blue GT is cheap to run, cheap to tax, cheap to insure, and it is a more capable performer than you might think; maximum torque of 184 lb /ft is available low down the rev range, and the engine is happy to rev too. It's no GTI in terms of straight line pace, but on pothole ridden UK roads, it's all the power you'll need. PLUS, you can smile driving past the pumps, rather than at the cashier on the pumps.
